A new cold storage facility in Örebro optimizes distribution and reduces CO2 emissions
Lantmännen Unibake Sweden’s long-term strategy is to develop a sustainable customer offer. As part of this a new cold storage facility saves tons of CO2 emissions and improves internal and external logistics.
In October 2023, a new cold storage facility located next to the existing bakery at Örebro (the company’s flagship bakery in Sweden) was completed. The new freezer streamlines the flow of goods and contributes to a more sustainable handling of products.
Before, the bakery at Örebro had a small internal freezer, and the rest of the bread volume was transported to external warehouses approximately 1,5 hours of driving from Örebro. By all measures, that was not an ideal situation – and it certainly didn’t support Lantmännen Unibake’s climate targets which, among other things, focus on smart logistics with less CO2 emissions from transportation.
“Our new warehouse is a modern, fully automated cold storage facility. It consists of a 36.5-metre high-bay warehouse, a low-bay storage section, a palletizing area, a machine room, and new logistics offices,” says Anna-Karin Lomakka, Supply Chain Manager in Lantmännen Unibake Sweden.
“Our old warehouse was very old. By building a new warehouse, we benefit from a building that is better isolated and modern cooling equipment. Furthermore, the new facility is located right in the center of the region where we operate. So, we are not only reducing internal transportation and distribution of our goods but also shortening the distance to our largest customers.”
Lantmännen Unibake Sweden’s total internal CO2 emission reduction from using the new cold storage facility is approximately 260 tons per year.
Further investments in the future
The new warehouse was operational in November 2023 when it began handling small batches before adding more volume. In the beginning of May 2024, the warehouse will be fully operational with a capacity to store 48.000 pallets.
Anna-Karin Lomakka adds that the new cold storage warehouse creates opportunities: By removing the old internal freezer at the Örebro bakery, it frees up space for future development and growth in Örebro.
“Lantmännen stands for sustainability – especially in Sweden where our brand is rooted. I’m personally proud to be a part of a company that not only talks about sustainability but shows customers and the public that we are doing something. Our new freezer is part of that message,” Anna-Karin Lomakka ends.
