Copenhagen June 5, 2025
As the European bakery industry unites behind the newly launched Sustainable Wheat Initiative Europe (SWIE), Lantmännen Unibake highlights its leadership in the shift toward lower-carbon flour. The international bakery group with Nordic roots is not only among the first to sign the Sustainable Wheat Manifesto but is also continuing its efforts to exceed the 30% reduction target for wheat and wheat flour.
Building on over a decade of on-farm sustainability data and verified results, Lantmännen Unibake is helping accelerate the transformation of the grain value chain by implementing Lantmännen’s pioneering program for farming-of-the-future, Climate & Nature.
“At Lantmännen Unibake, we’ve gained valuable experience through our Nordic Climate & Nature program, supported by 10 years of grain data and verified carbon footprint reductions of up to 45%. We know that sustainability starts in the field – with smarter cultivation methods, precision farming, fossil-free fertilizers and fuels, and other field-level innovations. But this is not a journey we can take alone. The real impact will come when customers, suppliers, and even competitors move in the same direction.

As part of a farmer-owned cooperative, we’re committed to sharing what works and learning from others
The Manifesto provides a shared foundation to accelerate this transformation – aligning ambitions, definitions, and actions across the industry.
As part of the SWIE symposium in Utrecht, Lantmännen Unibake’s Benelux and Southern Europe business is showcasing the expansion of the Climate and Nature program, Lantmännen’s program for farming of the future.
“We are proud to be the first region outside of the Nordic countries to implement the program and support sustainable farming practices with our premium bun range, Mr.Big.Mouth. And that is just the beginning: next year we are adopting the program for the breads and buns of our main Benelux brand, Pastridor. With the commitment of our bakery teams and our partners across the value chain, we are making sustainable agriculture part of everyday baking,” says Patrick Wauters, Managing Director, Lantmännen Unibake Benelux & South Europe.
Lantmännen Unibake is one of the first among more than 25 organisations to sign the SWIE Manifesto, which aims to reduce carbon emissions from wheat and flour by 30% by 2030 compared to 2022 levels. With a vertically integrated value chain and deep experience in sustainable agriculture, the company brings both vision and implementation capability to the coalition.
