Nutritionally balanced hot dog baguettes win gold in Poland
Schulstad’s two new hot dog baguettes with wholegrain and fibre have won an innovation award in a local competition in Poland. Baking more fast-food products with better nutritional values is vital in Lantmännen Unibake’s global ambition to “bake for a better world.”
Every year, “hurt&detal”, a publication dedicated to the retail market in Poland, organizes a local competition for fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) products that have distinguished themselves with an exceptional degree of innovation. This year, the Schulstad brand – part of the Lantmännen Unibake bakery group – won the 2024 FMCG Gold Innovation Award for its effort to re-think the French hot dog experience. An achievement that resonates well beyond the award itself.
“We are extremely happy and proud receivers of the 2024 FMCG Gold Innovation Award. Not only is it a testament to what we as a company strive for regarding health and nutrition in our products as defined in our sustainability strategy “Baking for a better world.” It is also a harbinger of things to come. We will continue exploring healthier bread solutions for a new generation of consumers who are becoming increasingly aware of what they consume,” says Izabela Wajnert, Marketing & Innovation Director at Lantmännen Unibake Poland.
The French Hot Dog is very popular in in Poland thanks to convenience stores and petrol stations, where they are available. Due to its popularity, the French Hot Dog category is now moving to home consumption, where consumers’ food choices are more careful.
“A 2023 study of food trends in Poland shows that 32% declare that identifying healthier options is challenging, and 19% are prepared to pay more for food assessed as healthy. With our new French Hot Dog products, we can meet our customer’s desire to make more nutritionally balanced choices in the fast-food category,” says Izabela Wajnert.
The new hot dog baguettes were created as part of the “Schulstad Honest Goodness” line. A global innovation concept centered around traditional baking techniques using only a few ingredients and clean-label recipes.
Fiber-rich and lots of wholegrains
The two new products – Schulstad Wholegrain Hot Dog Baguette and Schulstad Fibre Hot Dog Baguette – are available in selected supermarkets in Poland. Instead of visiting a quick-service restaurant, Poles can now make their French hot dogs at home and enjoy a bread type with a healthier profile than the usual white baguette.
Schulstad has added 12 types of grains and seeds to the Wholegrain Hot Dog Baguette, which is rich in fibre and has a reduced salt content.
Schulstad Fibre Hot Dog Baguette is baked with three sources of fibre from grains, fruits, and vegetables. These three sources of fibre represent 11 different types of bio-diverse ingredients that contribute the most to nourishing our microbiome and are good for the gut.
The two new products were just recently launched in Poland. Nevertheless, Schulstad believes that the healthier alternatives to a French hot dog have a bright future not only in the home
market but also in the rest of the EU, where especially younger generations like their fast-food but are increasingly open to trying bread products with improved nutritional values.
